Thanks to Google and Microsoft's efforts with many libraries there were many books scanned and made available via the Internet. Although the project has ended due to copyright concerns. But during this process there have been many dog books from the late 19th century and early 20th century. There were many that contained references to whippets. I'm attempting to gather some of those references and I invite you to share references that you've found.
interesting how whippets of today do not run like this. They have a double suspension gallop but the dogs of today to not have that extreme over reach of the hind legs as seen in this picture. Of course, they don't have the same conformation as they did way back. I would love to know if they were faster then or now.
ReplyDeleteRemember, in early races the starters threw the dogs physically into their strides. Although whippets ranged in size from 14-50#, the "best" size was considered to be 16#. Much smaller than today. So these pictures were probably shortly after the "launch."
